Brrr: China issues yellow alert for incoming cold front

Beijing expected to shiver as temperatures plummet

Fill up that hot water bottle, don a pair of thermals and order in some fiery lamian, Beijing's about to get very cold. This afternoon, China's meteorological authority renewed a yellow alert – the second lowest level in a four-tier storm warning system – for an incoming cold front sweeping across the country.

Over the next few days, temperatures are expected to drop by six to eight degrees Celsius in northeastern and central China, including parts of Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia. In Beijing itself, the forecast for this week shows temperatures hovering around 0°C and below, with the mercury dropping to as low as -13 on Thursday.

Beijing's already been suffering the effects of plummeting temperatures, with dozens of train services between Beijing and Shanghai cancelled in the past week. Flights out of Beijing Capital International Airport have reportedly also been experiencing delays. To add further insult to injury, it won't even be snowing in Beijing – so those of you hoping for an Instagrammable winter wonderland will have to keep waiting.

The good news, though? The majority of Beijing's outdoor ice skating rinks are now open for business, with the cold weather also expected to sort out all those pesky patchy parts. So strap on your skates and get out there!
